Organization Overview

Laboratory Safety and Environmental Health's role at The Rockefeller University is the development and management of the University's environmental health and safety programs. LS&EH works with the University's researchers, other departments on campus, and a wide range of outside regulatory and advisory agencies to ensure that the University is a safe and compliant place to work. In addition to providing support and services to the University, LS&EH conducts research in the health and safety fields. Aimed at minimizing waste, environmental impacts, and laboratory hazards, the staff's research spans the radioactive, biological and chemical aspects of laboratory safety and has resulted in the publication of two books and numerous journal articles.

Overview

The Chemical Waste Handler will be responsible for collecting, sorting, and packaging chemical waste and will serve as backup for collecting and processing biological waste. This includes the collection of properly labeled waste from the laboratories and physical plant facilities, the sorting, and processing of the waste, combining bulk liquids, packaging biological waste, assisting in maintaining the chemical waste processing areas in a safe, clean, organized manner, labeling waste for in-house storage as well as commercial disposal, moving and managing waste drums.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Chemical Waste:

  • Collection of properly labeled wastes from the laboratories and physical plant facilities

  • Sorting waste by category

  • Labeling, consolidation and packing of waste for in-house storage and off-site disposal

  • Maintaining the chemical waste processing and storage areas in a safe, clean, and compliant manner per RCRA regulations

  • Assisting the Assistant Waste Manager in all aspects of the chemical management program and management of waste facilities, database and record keeping

  • Spill cleanup - emergency response

  • Assist in laboratory clean outs

Biological Waste Handling (primary backup):

  • Pickup biological waste from laboratories

  • Scan biological waste for radioactive contamination

  • Prepare waste for shipment as Regulated Medical Waste

  • Maintain a clean biological waste room

  • Maintain documentation and archive green biological labels

Qualifications

High School diploma, or equivalent, is required. Associate's degree preferred or successful completion of college level chemistry courses. HAZWOPER 24-hour training/certification (Rockefeller University will provide initial and annual refreshers). Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability and willingness to wear a respirator. Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Ability to Knowledge of laboratory hazards, exposure control, and hazardous waste disposal methods a plus.
