Rockefeller University Computational Biologist in New York, New York
Job Title Computational Biologist
Laboratory / Department Vertebrate Genome Project
Speech and language are quintessential human traits. Yet remarkably, humans share many behavioral, neuroanatomical, and genetic similarities with other distantly related vocal learning species, like songbirds and cetaceans. In the Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language, we are investigating the evolutionary, developmental, and functional origins of these similarities at the level of neural circuits using a variety of model organisms and experimental approaches.
The Computational Biologist will join a team of researchers on the Vertebrate Genome Project and contribute to a significant genome curation undertaking, specifically in the assessment of genome assemblies using bespoke software tools and correcting assembly errors. Responsibilities include working closely with the lab's data production and assembly groups to report on insights from assessing assemblies to helping improve pipelines.
Master's degree in science required; educational emphasis in biological or computational biology or related experience preferred. Must have knowledge of genomics, experience in genome assembly visualization, genome analysis software, scripting languages, and relational databases. Excellent organization and prioritize skills required. The ability to organize, prioritize and plan a diverse range of work to meet deadlines required. Familiarity with a Unix environment is a must. Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must have an investigative and solution-oriented mindset and excellent communication skills to work effectively within large national and international consortia.
