Rockefeller University Director of Biotech Incubator | President's Office in New York, New York

Organization Overview

Consistent with our scientific mission, The Rockefeller University is establishing a Biotech Incubator to support and help grow biotech start-ups. The incubator will be located in newly renovated space on the university campus on the Upper East Side of New York. Providing laboratory and office spaces, shared equipment and meeting spaces, resources, and services, the incubator offers an environment where biotech entrepreneurs can develop their ideas and products collaboratively and cost-effectively to advance their start-up companies in the life sciences.

Overview

Reporting to the university’s executive vice president, the Director of Biotech Incubator has a deep understanding of the biotech sector and a proven track record of successfully setting up, organizing, mentoring, and maturing start-ups into successful companies.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and execute plans for the initial opening of the incubator by Fall 2023.

  • Create and oversee long-term strategy and planning for day-to-day operational issues.

  • Recruit, lead, and manage a small team.

  • Establish and manage a system for soliciting and reviewing tenant applications and business plans, steering and directing potential leads and opportunities to various internal stakeholders.

  • Administer the on-boarding of new members to the incubator with regard to documentation, policy review, etc.

  • Design, execute, support and implement outreach program, events, training and workshop activities including the development and coordination of entrepreneur programs.

  • Monitor tenants’ business plan milestones and progress. Communicate monthly (at a minimum) with each tenant company.

  • Coordinate with the appropriate university departments and personnel to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services to rental start-ups.

  • Maintain accounting systems, processes, and policies to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting; establish and maintain policies and procedures to ensure compliance with financial regulations and best practices; provide routine accounting and forecasting reports to university administration.

  • Conduct contract negotiations and relationships with rental start-ups.

  • Lead outreach to establish and maintain relationships with partners in the NYC Metro life sciences ecosystem.

  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, business administration, finance, or a related field is required; an advanced degree, including an MBA, Ph.D., or master’s degree, is preferred. Demonstrated entrepreneurial experience in biotech is preferred. At least 5-7 years of experience in the financial and operational management of a biotech company, biotech incubator, academic laboratory, or related field.

  • Strong knowledge of the biotech industry and its regulations and understanding of financial regulations and best practices for laboratory operations.

  • Experience in developing, implementing, and assessing business plans and go-to-market strategies. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must. At least two years of prior experience managing a team is required. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with keystakeholders, including early-stage biotech entrepreneurs, academic scientists, university lab support staff, and leadership. Experience in mentoring and coaching start-ups to achieve success. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are essential. Must have the highest level of integrity, intellectual capability, professionalism, honesty, and loyalty. Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and other electronic organization and project management applications is required.
