Job Information

Rockefeller University Research Assistant, Integrative Brain Function in New York, New York

Job: IRC26236

Job Title Research Assistant, Integrative Brain Function

Laboratory / Department Integrative Brain Function

Department Description

The Maimon lab aims to link the electrical activity of neurons and the biochemical action of molecules to their computational roles in animal behavior. The lab has a particular interest in understanding how central brain structures, distant from the sensory and motor periphery, govern behavioral choice.

Detailed Description

The Research Assistant will help develop custom optical imaging approaches under the supervision of graduate students and postdoctoral associates to make anatomical and physiological measurements in the fruit fly nervous system. Responsibilities include performing brain dissections alongside immunohistochemical staining protocols in fly brains. Once familiar with our fundamental experiments, fluorescence labeling, and imaging methods, the Research Assistant will work to develop super-resolution imaging data sets, either in vivo or ex vivo, via adaptation of emerging imaging methods described in the literature. Will build a custom, published microscope from optical components on an air table in house. Will also have opportunities to develop custom image-analysis code to analyze the microscopy data sets. Additionally, may be asked to help part-time with essential lab organization and maintenance.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science required; educational emphasis in physics, biology, chemistry, or biochemistry preferred. Previous experience with optics, or willingness to self-teach a must. A desire to troubleshoot fluorescence labeling methods, optical imaging results, and custom light paths to yield informative data sets and perform challenging experiments that include a wet lab component alongside optical and computational data analysis components is a must.
