Job Information
Rockefeller University Research Assistant in New York, New York
Job: IRC28044
Description
Job Title Research Assistant
Laboratory / Department Laboratory of Neurophysiology and Behavior
Department Description
The Laboratory of Neurophysiology and Behavior takes advantage of the relatively simple nervous system of the fruit fly Drosophila to examine how flexibility is engineered into the nervous system to give rise to adaptive behaviors, at the level of both individuals and species. We examine how learning rapidly shapes neural pathways to allow each member of a species to respond appropriately to their unique experience of the world. We also consider how neural circuits are adapted over longer evolutionary time scales to give rise to species-specific behaviors. Our lab employs a multidisciplinary approach, from biochemistry to behavior, with the goal of revealing the neural basis for flexible behavior at high resolution.
Detailed Description
The Research Assistant will work as part of a team studying the evolution of neural circuits underlying species-specific behaviors. The work will include CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing and generation of genetic reagents in non-model Drosophila species. Responsibilities would include DNA/RNA extraction, PCR (conventional, multiplex, touchdown, reverse transcription), cloning (restriction enzyme, Gibson assembly, Gateway), CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, Drosophila genetics and Drosophila husbandry. Will actively contribute to research projects, including participating in the planning and analysis of experiments and presenting data in laboratory meetings.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree required; educational emphasis in molecular biology, genetics, or closely related field preferred. Must have experience with genome browsers and BLAST and DNA annotation software such as ApE or SnapGene. Must be detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills and able to multitask, assisting with both scientific endeavors and organizational needs. Must be able to work in both in a team atmosphere for general lab duties, as well as a mentored atmosphere for a research project.
